Gen4 Multi-Sport Tag Performance: What the Numbers Really Mean

ChronoTrack’s Gen4 multi-sport tags are now in full production — and as testing continues, we’re able to quantify exactly how much technical performance has been gained compared to earlier generations. Below is a breakdown of what’s been observed in both ETSI (EU) and FCC (US) RFID operating frequencies.

🌍 EU Performance Highlights

In EU frequency environments:

  • Gen4 tags require ~50% less power to activate
  • Theoretical read range shows an increase of approximately 2.2 meters

While environmental factors (orientation, interference, mat construction, etc.) will always influence real-world performance, the technical jump between the previous generation and Gen4 is similar in size to the original jump seen between Gen1 and Gen3.

🇺🇸 US Performance Highlights

In US frequency environments:

  • Gen4 tags require ~37% of the power needed by previous generations to activate
  • Average theoretical read range gain is approximately 3.8 meters

One important note: performance gain varies by frequency. Lower portions of the US band see a stronger improvement, while upper frequencies are closer to previous-generation levels. Because US readers hop evenly across the full band, the overall gain is still real, but the size of the gain will vary depending on operating conditions.

⚡ Power on Tag Forward (PoTF): What It Means for Real-World Use

Power on Tag Forward (PoTF) is simply the minimum amount of power needed to “wake up” a passive RFID tag and establish a connection with the reader.

Lower PoTF means the tag can activate earlier and more consistently, which translates to:

  • Improved tag responsiveness, especially in less-than-ideal orientations
  • More reliable reads when athletes are moving quickly or transitioning
  • Larger “read window” when approaching timing points

Gen4’s reduced PoTF is not the result of real-world testing — it comes from controlled lab / theoretical analysis — but it does point to very real advantages that we expect to see in the field as more events deploy the new tags.
