Athlinks Virtual Results – Course Switching and Activity Tracker Linking

The Athlinks team has made some improvements to the Athlinks Virtual Results platform and we can’t wait to get them in your hands and the hands of your Athletes. Most recently we have worked on two important enhancements: Virtual Result Course Switching and Activity Tracker Linking. Read on for details below!

Virtual Result Course Switching

With Athlinks, Race Organizers can now allow Athletes to switch courses upon time entry for Virtual Races on Athlinks.

The Thinking Behind the Feature
One of the Top 50 races in the US — the Quad-City Times Bix 7 — has a unique course set-up: athletes have always been able to decide around the 2-mile mark if they want to continue to run the 7 Mile course, or if they want to take a shortcut and run 2 Miles. Taking this on-course race feature to the virtual world is the root of this request, but it’s been designed in a way that also provides support relief for your teams. Once enabled, athletes will no longer need to get in touch with you to switch between race distances, as they can self-manage their race by switching between different courses/distances when they’re entering their Virtual Race result.

How it Works
When Athletes navigate to their IRP or Time Input Link to enter their Virtual Results time, they can be prompted to select the course they would like to upload results for. The course selection will automatically display the course for which they originally registered for, however if they would rather submit a time for a different course length, they now have the ability to do so. Each Athlete will still only be able to enter one virtual result per registration.

Check out the images below to see how it works from an Athlete’s perspective.

How to Enable This Feature
As the Timer (or Race Director) only you have the ability to enable this feature for your Athletes through our Virtual support team.

There are two ways to enable this for your events:

  1. When filling out the Virtual Race Google form, you will now see an option to turn Course Switching ON. After clicking this option, our Virtual Support team will do the dirty work on the back end for you.
  2. If you have already submitted your Virtual Race to our team via the Google Form and would like to enable this option, please send us an email at to let us know which event(s) you would like us to enable this feature for.

Important Things to Know:
Once you enable this feature for an event, ALL course options will be presented to an Athlete to choose from — you cannot pick and choose which courses are shown and which are not.

Please also note, if your race has course options with differences in registration fees, ie. $20 for the 10k and $40 for the Half Marathon, there is no way to upcharge athletes who decide to enter times for a different course.

As always, if your athletes have questions about all things Virtual Results on Athlinks, feel free to direct them to the Athlete FAQ page

Activity Tracker Linking

By popular demand, we have added in additional results fidelity by displaying links on the IRP to external Activity Trackers. When an athlete chooses to submit their Activity Link as they are submitting their time, a button now appears on the Individual Result Page that directs to the external Tracker. This addition is perfect for race directors and athletes alike looking to make results submission more official. Note: any privacy settings on the users Athlinks profile (including claimed results) and external trackers is observed, so not all results may be viewable.
